Today marks the 500th birthday of John Calvin, a theologian par excellence, pastor, and one of the world’s greatest Bible teachers outside of Scripture. There are few men in church history who inspire more acclaim and more controversy than Calvin.
His birthday is one worth celebrating, to be sure.
However, as with all things, it’s a fine line between celebrating and idolizing. My fear for some is that we might fall into the trap of idolizing a fallen man, instead of worshiping the God he served.
Calvin was a theologian who placed Christ at the centre of everything. Even as we celebrate the life and work of this man today, let us not take our eyes off of Jesus Christ, our great God and Saviour.
