Redeem Your Summer – By Studying!

As I’ve written about recently, one of the great things about summer and vacations is that you have the opportunity to relax and maybe catch up on some reading. But it also offers an opportunity to study a special topic or two! One way to do this that I’d highly recommend is by signing up for Ligonier Connect.

Ligonier Connect offers you video-based teaching from R.C. Sproul in an online learning environment that allows you to learn at your own pace while engaging in meaningful discussion with your fellow learners. And because each lesson can be completed usually within an hour to an hour and a half, it’s not a huge time commitment!

Each course allows you to sign up either as an individual for $57 (gives you six months to complete the course), or you can sign up a group (min. 3 people) for $47 per person, so it’s actually pretty affordable.

A look at the Ligonier Connect learning environment

I’ve got 3 lessons to go on “Principles of Biblical Interpretation,” and I have to say, overall it’s been excellent. The content is outstanding and the feedback on answers from classmate has been hugely helpful and very encouraging. The one challenge I’ve found is that, because I’m signed up as an individual, I really have to push myself to be disciplined in finishing it well. This is largely because:

  1. I have a tendency to be very, very busy.
  2. I have no one really holding me accountable for getting it done besides me.

Fortunately, work has been very encouraging in me completing this program as it does offer a lot of practical benefit to them (there are some nice things about working for a Christian organization, in case you were wondering). Also, because it just got really hot again here in London, there’s little better than enjoying an icy beverage at Starbucks while digging into some very practical learning.

If you have the opportunity, I’d highly recommend investing some of your time this summer into a course through Ligonier Connect.

What, if any, study opportunities are you going to take advantage of this summer?

  1. I have to say that I personally fine the Ligonier connect site a bit over marketed. The content is indeed good, don’t get me wrong, but the connectivity that they boast about is missing as far as I’m concerned. I’ve tried to be interactive but have received no feedback from class mates nor the moderator. Even when I send feedback to the Ligonier Connect contact us link I get nothing in response. At $9 a month I’ll hold on to it for a year or so but unless they amp up the responsiveness and the interface (with regards to interacting, building profiles, etc) I’m not so sure I recommend it unless you don’t mind doing a self study.
    Thank for your blog!
